About Us

Our Free School will always adopt a family approach so that students feel valued and connected. We will always consider the student’s family and social background as well as their educational needs. It is our aim to ensure students feel part of the school family.

Building upon the strong principles underpinning Charter schools in the US, the One in a Million Free School will be a small school, ensuring each student is well known to each other and the wider school community. The ‘smallness’ of the One In A Million Free School will be its strength.

All our staff and volunteers share a vision and passion for making a difference through establishing respect, support and developing a deep sense of self esteem and personal worth. In short, acknowledging and promoting each young person as unique seeing them as ‘one in a million’.

It is through an understanding of the needs of the young people we work with, coupled with our drive and determination to make a difference, that One in a Million is committed to offering a sustainable and successful alternative in educational provision; supporting each and every individual student to achieve to their best across a range of focused and purposeful learning experiences.

The One in a Million Free School will welcome students from all backgrounds and of all abilities, ensuring each individual student has the opportunity to flourish and achieve their potential, in turn contributing to raising educational attainment and improving life chances across Bradford.

The ethos and vision of the One in a Million Free School are based upon our extensive experiences of delivering successful community based programmes in sport, the arts and enterprise.

The “Hub and Spoke” Model links the One in a Million Free School (hub) with our existing range of Community Education and Community Sports projects (spokes).

Our “Wheel of Hope” vision places our Free School at the heart of all that the charity does to ensure that our innovative education projects reach as many young people as possible in and out of school throughout the Bradford community.

So what is a Free School? One In A Million Free School is a state school and there is little discernible difference other than we are directly funded by the government (rather than the funds coming from the local authority) and have some flexibility regarding the curriculum. You can see more here http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/leadership/typesofschools/freeschools

At the One In A Million Free School we are striving for excellence and will be rigorously monitored by OFSTED and The Department for Education.

Curriculum

We will implement a mix of vocational and academic learning, themed across sports, the arts and enterprise and delivered within a broad and balanced curriculum. Our curriculum will ensure students acquire strong basic skills in literacy and numeracy, build conceptual knowledge and develop personal, social and learning skills. It will be built on a sure foundation in Key Stage 3 where we will ensure that, as far is possible, all students read to their chronological age as we recognise this is the key to success in vocational and academic curriculum at Key Stage 4.

Our aim is to ensure that our students leave with the skills they will need to make a positive contribution as adults and, therefore, our approach will be individualised and tailored to individual levels of development and ambition. We will celebrate the successes and ambitions of each young person not only through nationally recognised awards, but also through the achievement of non-traditional awards, including professional certification in sport, the arts and/or enterprise.
